5 Morning Routine Essentials for Productivity and Success

Mornings are just not my thing. Everyday I only barely manage to crawl out of my bed, and then pretty much do a zombie-walk to brush my teeth.

But, for a few months now, after being inspired by Pick Up Limes, I’ve started to notice how important morning routines are for productivity and success. They not only set the tone for the day, but also recharge, motivate and rejuvenate you to give your best. So, I decided it was about time I made some changes in my life and implement a morning routine to help me start my day right. For over a month now, I’ve been following the steps that I’m just about to discuss, and it has made a world of difference.

Of course, I am not saying that I now love mornings, but I’m slowly learning to appreciate them. Whether you are a morning person or a night owl like me, these morning routine essentials will help set a positive tone that will last you the entire day.


1. A Lemon Water Drink


If there is one thing that has made the biggest difference to my mornings, it’s lemon water. I almost never believed in the benefits of this drink until I started consistently drinking it every morning for two months. It provides instant energy, improves your mood, aids digestion, boosts immune system, detoxifies your system & reduces hunger cravings throughout the day. It’s healthy and delicious, so there’s absolutely no reason not to be drinking this every morning.

2. A 10 Minute Workout + A Pro Tip in the End


Now I am one of the laziest people on earth, and so I understand working out in the morning is not everyone’s cup of tea. But, honestly, wouldn't you want to invest just 10 minutes everyday to get your heart rate up and jumpstart your metabolism in a jiffy? Usually I prefer to get out and go for a walk, but when time’s a constraint, I love this quick 10 minute workout which you can totally do just by your bedside.

  • 1 minute jog on the spot

  • 20 jumping jacks

  • 15 sqats

  • 30 second plank

  • 15 crunches

If you have some extra time at hand, just repeat this 2-3 times. :) Easy, right?


Pro Tip: While you’re doing all this, it’s also a good time to tune into a podcast or listen to an audio book. They will greatly add to your knowledge of things and we all know that multitasking is the way to go!


3. A Skincare Routine

Just how you shower everyday, taking care of your facial skin also makes a lot of difference to your confidence levels and overall physical health. But, skincare routines are tough to follow if they get too specific. That’s why I like to keep things simple. After learning from my own experience of experimenting with too many products, here’s a pro-tip for you- When in doubt, prefer to invest in a few really good quality skincare products over having too many of them. Also, where ever possible, try to keep it natural and chemical-free.

My morning skincare routine goes a little something like this:

  • Cleanse with a gentle face wash. I use Cetaphil.

  • A spritz of toner spray. I use the one by Lotus

  • A generous layer of face-cream. I use the daily face lotion by Kaya

  • A top coat of sun block. Again, I use the one by Kaya

  • And, a lip balm. I keep switching the product here every few days.

& that’s it! Super simple, right? It’s always a delight to see my skin feel smoother and look brighter.


4. A Nutritional Breakfast


Cliches are cliches for a reason, and breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. No matter how busy you are, never ever miss having a nutritional breakfast. I find it easier if I just plan my breakfast the night before, so that there is no last minute rush in the morning. Typically, as a rule of thumb, avoid simple carbs and highly processed food. Incorporate steel cut oats, upma, smoothie bowls, idli, eggs with whole grain toast etc. in your daily breakfast regimen. At the moment, I don’t eat just the right things here, but there’s still a really long way to go.


5. A To-Do List


I am a planner nerd and I live for these lists. But even if you aren’t, benefits of making one I am sure are not hidden from you. Think about it this way. If you don’t set a daily goal for yourself in the morning, you will feel lost the whole day. Only by having a clear goals list will you know how well you did today and how there’s still a long way to go. Also, another tiny materialist perk- if you tick off every item on the list, you can give yourself a little treat every night. Each morning I write down 3-5 of the most important things that I plan to tick off by the end of the day. It really keeps me organised with all my tasks, makes everything so much more manageable and most importantly, keeps my priorities in order.


So there it is! You already have with yourself a proper checklist of things to do every morning. Of course, you can do some much more- like meditate, read, call up parents etc. While these are all amazing, the ones I listed above are just somethings that I deem essential.
